At 1605 hours on Sunday, July 28, 2019, Station 2 units along with Battalion Chief 3, Medic 3, EMS 1, Fire Boats 41 & 19, E41, Utility 42, E231, Rescue Squad 4, Utility 1 and units from Station 8 were dispatched to the 2-64 box for an injured subject in the area of Buoy WC1 in the Rhode River. Maryland State Police Aviation Command Trooper 2 was also requested due to the location and nature of the call.
Callers reported an injured man in the water near Flat Island located just east of the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center. The man was initially reported to be unconscious in the water and brought to Flat Island. He regained consciousness prior to medical personnel arrival however he had no feeling from his torso down. Due to this injury, paramedics felt that transporting the patient to a land based medic unit by boat could potentially cause further harm. MSP Trooper 2 flight medic deployed to Flat Island to assess the man and hoist the patient to the hovering helicopter. The man was transported Priority 1 to a trauma center.
